Job Description : Summary
The Department of Education, Innovation, and Technology (EIT) (www.bcm.edu/departments/education-innovation-and-technology) at Baylor College of Medicine (www.bcm.edu) seeks to fill a position for a STEM Senior Instructional Designer in the Center for Educational Outreach (https://www.bcm.edu/education/education-programs/center-for-educational-outreach). This is a full-time staff position that will report to Nancy Moreno, PhD, department chair of the Center for Educational Outreach.
Candidates must have at least mid-level skills in website design and content management. Candidates must also have experience designing and/or implementing K-12 teacher professional development and/or developing K-12 STEM curricula. The ideal candidate is a creative self-starter who loves science education and has writing skill to independently generate short-form articles, newsletters and social media posts, as well as manage content on an existing website.
The Department of EIT supports teaching and learning at Baylor College of Medicine. Through its Center for Educational Outreach, the department provides in-person and web-based education and resources for teachers, students, and the public-all designed to improve science skills and literacy and general understanding of clinical and basic biomedical research.
The Center for Educational Outreach seeks to improve biomedical, basic science, and health education across the K-16 continuum and increase opportunities for underrepresented populations to access careers in medicine, science, and the health professions. These activities are often carried out through partnerships with museums, school districts, colleges, and universities.
Partly through efforts of the Center for Educational Outreach, Baylor College of Medicine is recognized as a leader among U.S. medical schools for its contributions to informal and precollege science and health education and its commitment to program evaluation and research on best practices for science and health education.
This position may be eligible to work partial remote after an orientation and training period.
Job Duties
Facilitates the design of solutions that are in the best interest of the educational programs.
Provides access to necessary resources needed for design and/or implementation.
Serves as project manager and assists in developing new science curriculum programs.
Generates, gathers and formats web content updates on project pages and associated resource pages.
Serves as primary contact and resource to ensure that web-based project information is accurate, up-to-date, and properly categorized and tagged.
Enhances website usability of social media.
Interacts with collaborators to update content on web pages, add news items, and make routine communications.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Five years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a science field is preferred.
Minimum of five years of experience in K-12 science teaching, curriculum development, teacher professional development or educational website design.
Teacher certification is highly desirable, but not required.
Experience writing STEM curriculum, classroom lessons and STEM-related material for student and/or public audiences.
Strong proficiency with MS Office, Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite applications (i.e. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, Acrobat) and a wide variety of instructional design and development tools (e.g. Articulate Storyline, Captivate, Camtasia, audio/video, web conferencing).
Ability to create and edit content using web-based tools such as Google Docs, WordPress or other Content Management System (CMS).
Experience in print based or web design highly desirable, but not required.
Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all stakeholders via face to face interactions, electronic and web-based communications.
Self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative.
Experience working in collaborative teams to achieve desired outcomes and milestones.
Ability to be adaptive and shift with job demands and conditions.
Must be able to work independently and manage time and work to meet deliverables and outcomes.
