About the Department
The Ergonomics Center of North Carolina (Center) is a membership-based organization housed within the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University. Founded in 1994, the Center was created to make workplaces safer, more productive, and more competitive by providing practical, cost-effective ways to reduce or eliminate musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
The Center provides occupational ergonomics consulting, training programs and research for corporations, facilities, and individuals to support and enhance a company’s ergonomics efforts. Each service is tailored to meet an organization’s specific ergonomic needs and corporate goals. With extensive experience in ergonomics research, consulting, and training, the center helps in managing ergonomics and minimizing ergonomic risk factors in today’s work environments.
Essential Job Duties
The Senior Ergonomist position duties include the following:
Provide ergonomics consultation as needed to employers and employees in a broad range of business and industry environments.
Act as project lead for ergonomics consulting projects, managing internal and external resources as needed.
Deliver specific Center training classes (appropriate to background and schedule).
Develop and expand Center membership and client base through public meetings, seminars, workshops, and other forums.
Develop written proposals for clients with project scope definition and estimates of time for activity completion.
Provide leadership and technical guidance to junior members of the Center’s consulting staff if applicable.
Update, create, and review training materials content for technical accuracy, consistency, and image.
Manage students assigned to work within Ergonomics Services functional area.
Work in a leadership directed, team-based work environment.
Consult with and collaborate on Center activities with other Center professionals, regulatory officials, researchers, and non-Center professionals throughout North Carolina and the United States to fulfill the Center’s mission.
Contribute to the generation of applied research projects to be conducted in NC State University´s state-of-the-art Ergonomics Laboratories.
The Master Ergonomist position duties include the following:
Provide ergonomics consulting, training, client management, accreditation program coordination activities, and support research projects.
Provide ergonomics consultation as needed to employers and employees in a broad range of business and industry environments.
Act as project lead for ergonomics consulting projects, managing internal and external resources as needed.
Provide leadership and technical guidance to junior/senior members of the Center’s consulting staff.
Consult with and collaborate on Center activities with other Center professionals, regulatory officials, researchers, and non-Center professionals throughout the world.
Contribute to the generation of multi-faceted applied research projects.
Engage in leadership and collaborative and independent mentoring of junior/senior members of the Center’s consulting staff including the development and delivery of mentorship practices and Center improvement initiatives.
Other Responsibilities
Position involves approximately 20-40% travel.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Senior Ergonomist: Must have a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree in engineering or a related field plus 6 years of field experience OR Master’s (or equivalent) degree in ergonomics or related field plus 4 years of field experience.
Master Ergonomist: Must have a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree in Engineering or related field, plus at least 10 years of substantive field experience or a Master’s (or equivalent ) degree in Ergonomics or related field and at least 8 years of substantive field experience.
Other Required Qualifications
The following is required for both levels (Sr. & Master):
Experience assessing physical work areas using various evaluation techniques (including but not limited to the Strain Index, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), NIOSH Lifting equation, and Liberty Mutual Manual Materials Handling Guide).
An interest in mentoring junior/senior ergonomists and staff.
An interest in generation of multi-faceted applied research project.
An interest in Center improvement initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
Must have certification in the science of ergonomics with the designation Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) preferred or a specific plan to achieve full certification within 6 months of hire.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Must have certification in the science of ergonomics with the designation Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) preferred for the Senior/ Master Ergonomist level.
A valid Driver’s License is required.
