Project Overview:
In August of 2017, Georgia Power selected Bechtel to complete construction of the two-reactor expansion of a nuclear power plant near Augusta, Georgia. Plant Vogtle Units 3 & 4 will be the first new units built in the U.S. in the last three decades and are currently the only new units being constructed in the country. At the peak of construction, this vital project will employ up to 5,000 on site. These positions will include building tradespeople, engineers, field supervisors, construction and project managers, quality assurance professionals, safety professionals, procurement, subcontract specialists and many others.
This position may be required to work a schedule of rotating shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays. All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of continued employment for the duration of their assignment. The ability to obtain/maintain access to the facility is required.
Position Overview:
The Vogtle Project is looking for a safety specialist to join our Unit 4 ES&H Team. Assists in the integration of specialized safety requirements into the planning, permitting, design, and construction of Bechtel projects. Interprets specialized requirements, evaluates and applies specialized scientific principles, and formulates scopes of work, plans, and methodologies suitable for achieving the desired objectives. Provides technical assistance to other Safety Specialists. This position may require additional overtime hours as deemed necessary.
Responsibilities:
Provides technical support to safety studies and assessments and other applicable safety and health reviews.
Provides specialized safety input to engineering, construction, and subcontracts, thus ensuring that safety requirements are properly integrated into project planning, design criteria, construction plans and specifications and subcontracts.
Participates in meetings, as required, with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of specialized safety and health requirements that may affect project design, construction schedule, and cost.
Assists in drafting ES&H Plans, project specific safety procedures, project specific implementation plans (e.g., evacuation plans, safety training plans and programs, People Based Safety), and technical reports.
Conducts safety inspections of project construction activities to monitor compliance with safety requirements including contractual commitments, permits, the project’s ES&H plan, and other applicable safety plans.
Conducts activities to confirm hazard resolution for closure of risk reduction activities.
Interacts with responsible parties to affect timely resolution of issues and to inform management if appropriate resolution is not achieved.
Implements and conducts project awareness activities and toolbox sessions for project/facility manual/non-manual personnel as requested.
Qualifications and SKills:
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in life sciences (e.g., biology, public health) or physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry), or safety/industrial engineering from an accredited college or university and at least 1 years of related professional progressive experience. In lieu of formal degree, at least 7 years related professional progressive experience.
Must be physically capable to conduct field inspections and participate in project walkdowns which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in very small and/or confined spaces, and lifting up to 60 lbs.
Must be able to pass nuclear security screening requirements and be able to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear power facility.
Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized knowledge in a field of science (e.g., meteorology, ecology, biology, forestry, wetlands, archeology), engineering (e.g., civil, environmental, mechanical) or related disciplines.
Knowledge of environmental management, monitoring and mitigation systems, principles, and methodologies.
Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations and resource agencies’ permitting processes and responsibilities.
Knowledge of engineering, construction, and subcontract work processes.
Skilled in oral and written communication and knowledge of computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in Nuclear Power or Nuclear Facility industries.
