The qualified candidate will perform R&D functions, under supervision of senior technical staff, focused on fuel-fired and thermally driven technologies. This Engineer will be expected to contribute to or be responsible for the design, setup, and execution of experimental test programs, in addition to experimental infrastructure design, innovative test methods, and data analysis, while maintaining a strong communication with Project Managers and other internal stakeholders. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.LocationDes Plaines, ILPrimary ResponsibilitiesDesign and build mechanical and electrical systems such as, hydronic heating and cooling loops, HVAC ductwork, combustion systems and electrical distribution panelsUnderstand and develop mechanical and electrical drawings, software flow diagrams, standard operating procedures for testing equipment and job safety analysesImplement experimental programs based on an understanding of current research and industry standards/test methods (ANSI, ASHRAE, etc.)Execute experimental investigations of heating, cooling, power generation, renewable energy, and food service technologiesSpecify, install, and calibrate instrumentation and install and program data acquisition systemsAnalyze data and prepare test reports for internal and external useTrack and maintain project budgets at overall and task levelsPotential for travel for industry events, field site visits, or pilot implementationsOther duties as assignedKnowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other CharacteristicsInterest in learning new skills and energy technology topicsPrior research experience in a laboratory settingFundamental understanding of heat transfer, small scale power generation, refrigeration, and combustion systemsExperience with instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems specifications (e.g., National Instruments hardware and software), programming experience is a plusPractical and fundamental knowledge of experimental instrumentation and infrastructure including flow meters, power meters, temperature sensing, combustion emission analyzersFamiliarity with common tools (drills, pipe wrenches), construction materials (struts, bolts), plumbing (Pex, Propress and SharkBite fittings), electrical (AWG gauge, conduit and power disconnects)Clear and concise communication skillsSelf-motivated and able to work with little supervisionExcellent computer literacyEducation and ExperienceA Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline; Relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED AP, CEM, etc.)A minimum of 3 years relevant work experience (HVAC and energy systems are preferred) or an advanced degree in the abovementioned engineering fieldsDemonstrated hands-on experience designing and building mechanical and electrical systemsYour past professional experience in these areas is highly valued, but so are your personal abilities and willingness to learn.
