Job Description : The University of Virginia is seeking an Electrical Engineer for Facilities Management. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia’s wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVa’s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, in addition to managing capital construction and renovation for University-owned and leased properties.
Electrical Engineers’ work may occur in a variety of facilities, operations, or other areas of the University. Engineers may specialize in of the many concentrations within the engineering profession. They manage and receive assistance from Engineering Technicians, as well as report to supervisors when necessary or if needing approval.
Job Description
Ensure adherence to all applicable standards and specifications in their area of concentration.
Collaborate with FM and E&U leadership, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Environmental Compliance Manager to ensure compliance with regulations. Monitor and instruct sound practices to ensure a safe working environment.
Perform quality control of work and evaluate facilities, products, tests, etc. for compliance with University needs. Design and manage any alterations, renewals, or additions. Investigate problems and make recommendations to prevent reoccurrences.
Assign and monitor staff performance in the management of engineering detail work. Provide technical guidance and instruction for employees with clear expectations, so that training programs yield highly skilled workers.
When applicable, provide professional customer service by promptly responding to work orders and establishing acceptable resolutions to concerns.
Research background information on projects, formulate plans, present work with clarity for approval, develop design documents, and respond to requests during construction. Procure and manage contract services when needed.
Collect building electrical system data and perform power systems analysis (short circuit, load flow, overcurrent coordination, and arc flash analysis) as needed for existing buildings, in support of plant capital projects, and as well as daily operations. Develop and maintain electrical system models to support such studies.
Be an integral part of Power and Light team and provide technical advice to high voltage electricians in maintenance and installation of electrical distribution system.
Provide detailed metering data analyses; Resolve or mitigate power quality issues such as harmonics, grounding, noise, etc.
Provide technical support for Utility plants’ efficient operations.
Perform protective relay settings calculations for the substations and utility plants; develop logic diagrams and other documentation as needed to ensure adequate protection of major plant equipment.
Perform minor rooftop PV solar designs or studies; perform minor recommended maintenance; coordinate installation and maintenance with contractors.
Provide electrical design and specifications for minor in-house projects.
Oversee electrical equipment installation and provide commissioning support for electrical equipment, such as switchgear, transformers and switches.
Ensure proper communication of electrical distribution system network devices such as relays, meters, and PV inverters. Troubleshoot or resolve network issues working closely with ITS/FMIT.
Review construction drawings; support compliance efforts with applicable codes, University Facilities Design Guidelines, and industry standards/best practices.
Provide electrical safety training to FM personnel on a periodic basis.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
Experience:
Four years’ experience in design, construction, operations, or concentrated field.
Experience with NEC, IEEE and other applicable industry codes and standards.
Ability to perform arc fault calculations; familiarity with computer simulation software tools (SKM Power Tools).
Preferred experience with, and knowledge of medium voltage (up to 15 kV) & low voltage (up to 600 VAC) power plant and/or heavy industrial distribution systems including utility scale generators, substations, switchgear, transformers, panel boards, grounding systems, capacitor banks, etc.
Preferred experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications such as Schneider Electric PME.
Licensure: Professional Engineer required (or ability to achieve within 6 months by comity); NABCEP PV certification preferred.
The anticipated hiring range for this position is $90,000.00-$110,000.00, commensurate with relevant experience, skills, and demonstrated competencies

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The job does require frequent traveling some distance to attend meetings, inspect construction activities and programs, as well as navigating to electrical and mechanical spaces. The job also involves extensive use of desktop computers.
