The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University (FIU) is looking for a visionary leader to continue its growth and work with the growing industry within Miami, Florida and the nation on innovative solutions.

The Department Chair is the Chief Administrative Officer of the department, reporting directly to the Dean of College and work collaboratively with Director of School in coordinating and promoting graduate program enterprise. The individual serves as a leader and facilitator, for the success and well-being of the academic unit as well as the faculty and staff. The chair is expected to promote an environment conducive to faculty productivity and student achievement and promote an atmosphere of mutual respect, equity, and collegiality among faculty and students.
Requirements and qualifications:

An earned doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the department;Research, teaching and service accomplishments and qualifications for appointment at the rank of Professor, with tenure, in the civil and Environmental Engineering Department.A B.S. in Civil and Environmental EngineeringAn understanding of and experience with the ABET accreditation process.Experiences as administrator in the areas of budgets, promoting professional development of faculty and staff, scheduling, academic program and curriculum development, and assessing academic programs.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Leadership skills, with experience in managing faculty and staff.A record of teaching in academic setting.Commitment to promoting students success.An ability to represent CEE outside the University, among alumni and industry.Effective record of collaboration, demonstrating the ability to work with School Director.
FIUs Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department has enjoyed significant growth in research, averaging about $8M, annually, in external funding. CEE is home to several federally funded research centers and is ranked by NSF among the top 20 in federally funded research expenditures. CEEs major research centers and laboratories offer unparalleled collaborative research opportunities, including the Wall of Wind (WOW), an NSF Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Experimental Facility (EF), the Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC), a US DOT Tier 1 UTC, the Wind Hazard and Infrastructure Performance Center (WHIP), a NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), the Lehman Center of Transportation Research (LCTR), the Titan America Structures and Construction Testing Laboratory, as well as the Driver Simulation Lab and Intelligent Transportation System Laboratories. Also, recently, CEE faculty received the NSF Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 award to support the design of a National Full-scale Testing Infrastructure for Community Hardening in Extreme Wind, Surge, and Wave Events (NICHE). NICHE aims for a facility design to enable the wind and coastal engineering research community.
Notably, FIU College of Engineering and Computing is expanding its impact in the four thrust areas (i) infrastructure and resiliency, (ii) information technology and security, (iii) health, and (iv) clean energy, and CEE plays a leading role in FIUs two Preeminent Programs the Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (InteRaCt) and the Extreme Events Institute (EEI). This unique research environment allows for effective collaborations with other faculty across the university. The CEE is home to 26 faculty and offers BSc, MSc and PhD degrees. Our faculty carry out state-of-the-Art research in various civil and environmental engineering fields, including, structures, wind, transportation, water resources, geotechnical and the environmental engineering. CEE is part of the newly established Moss School of Construction, Infrastructure and Sustainability, established by the generous donation of $10M from Chad Moss and his family.
