Hybrid Work Position:This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week. The Aero-Thermal Integration Engineer will work cross-functionally to integrate and synthesize all airflow and thermal related areas for current and future performance vehicles. Key elements of the job are: Lead development of current and/or future performance vehicles Integrate cross-functionally between GM Global Aero, GM VDDV (Virtual Design, Development and Validation- CAE), and GM Motorsports Aerodynamics to enable enterprise-wide learning and technology transfer Responsible for synthesizing vehicle geometry to achieve system-level requirements and conducting studies to understand component- and system-level tradeoffs to best achieve vehicle-level requirements Work within vehicle performance teams to define performance requirements for powertrain heat rejection, brake cooing, under-hood thermal, and aerodynamics Integrate vehicle aerodynamics with styling and all other vehicle imperatives (manufacturability, cost, mass, safety, etc.) Align VDDV analysis activities across different functional areas Coordinate reduced- and full-scale aerodynamics model design Support reduced- and full-scale wind tunnel testing Oversee model building and instrumentation of supported programs in Michigan facilities Interface with the Design Studio and the Program Team in Michigan and the Motorsports team in North Carolina Estimate drag, lift and other aerodynamic deliverables Evaluate automobile exterior with focus on aerodynamics Clearly post process and interpret simulation results to identify current performance and develop areas of improvements Present numerical and visual data and recommendations effectively, deep dive the flow field and be able understand and explain the physics behind the flow behavior. Required Qualifications: 5+ years of experience in Motorsports Deep knowledge of motorsports tool chain for flow optimization and understanding Able to understand and interpret results from CFD codes, 1D solvers and wind Tunnel tests Experience/knowledge of aerodynamics CFD methodology and applications Familiarity with Aerodynamic and Wind Tunnel testing, measurement techniques and data systems Preferred Qualifications: Experience/knowledge of aerodynamics CFD methodology and applications Familiarity with Aerodynamic and Wind Tunnel testing, measurement techniques and data systems Experience using commercial CFD solvers such as FLUENT, STAR-CCM, EXA-POWERFLOW, Mesh generators such as ANSA, HYPERWORKS and post processor such as PowerVIZ and Ensight DFSS training, Green Belt Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics required About GM Our vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion and we embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.
